This feature length war drama is the story of one man’s selfless efforts in 1983. A lowly hot dog vendor from Columbus, Ohio took the comforts of home (hot dogs, sodas and cards and letters from school children) to the Marines that were part of the Peacekeeping Force President Reagan sent to Beirut during the start of the Lebanese civil war. So moved by the reactions he received, Harry promised to return again that Christmas season.
The first trip in February, he had all the help he needed from Sen. John Glenn and his government, but after the US Embassy bombing in June and the Marine barracks suicide bombing on October 23rd, no one would or could help Harry get back except the Lebanese Ambassador to the UN. Despite numerous warnings not to go, Hot Dog Harry Hirschinger, a Jew, journeyed back into harms way fulfilling his promise to return. This trip he was shot at numerous times and nearly taken hostage by the fledging terrorist group Hezbollah. That was confirmed by President Reagan when Harry met him a few months later. The movie tells that story and includes what was going on in the background as the wannabe terrorists plotted to blow up the Marine barracks and to take Harry hostage. A story that will make the viewer cry, laugh, sit on the edge of their seats and hopefully inspire others not to accept the word no when they know they are doing the right thing in the face of immeasurable odds.
Hot Dog Harry went on to found a non-profit 501-c-3 organization named OPERATION: America Loves You whose sole mission is to boost the morale of American servicemen and women serving their country unable to be home for the holidays to show them they are not forgotten. www.OPSALY.org
